Within striking distance of Istanbul’s most famous landmark, Erten Konak is a unique Istanbul Blue Mosque hotel located right in the heart of the Sultanahmet area of the Turkish capital. With such a central location, the hotel is excellently placed for those who want to have all of Sultanahmet’s sights on their doorstep within a few minutes’ walk of the Hagia Sophia Museum, Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern. This luxury Istanbul hotel is a beautiful wooded building with a fascinating history. It was built on the orders of General Cemal Gürsel, who was made the 4th president of Turkey after a military coup in 1960 headed by a group of revolting army officers. Its luxurious wooden interiors and delightful gardens were fully restored in 2004 and have since captured the imagination of many film makers who have made over 16 films here. You can relax and unwind in the hotel’s Tulip Garden where General Gürsel once parked his car, decorated with festoons and paved with mosaics picturing tulips, a traditional Ottoman symbol. There is also another café and breakfast room situated at the back of the hotel called the Winter Garden, which is where the general’s harem lived. You can also go up and enjoy a drink at the Terrace Café which has lovely views of the Blue Mosque or sample Turkish cuisine in the hotel restaurant.
